Creating a Healing Zine

Creating a Healing Zine

The intention of this lesson is…

The intention of this lesson is…

to create a physical reminder of what you have learned and collected throughout your healing journey. This zine is an opportunity to express your creativity and compile key mantras, affirmations, intentions, and notes to self that you can keep with you as you move through the world.

How to prepare

How to prepare

Before you begin…

Gather your materials:

– Paper (a sheet of 8×11 paper will do just fine)

– Something to write with, markers, colored pencils, or pens -whatever allows your creativity to fly.

– Scissors & glue

-Option to use old magazines or scrapbooking materials

Choose a physical location you feel free to express yourself in.

Manage your distractions, as you are able to:

– Consider what tends to distract you and minimize those distractions during this time. Consider turning off reminders and notifications on your devices; inform people of the time you need for this practice, close your door. etc.

Activity

Activity

When you feel ready to begin…

Get present:

– Take a few deep breaths in and out.

– Remind yourself that whatever unfolds during this time is honorable.

Let’s begin

  1. Set an intention for what you’d like to include in your zine. You are invited to be as creative and whimsical, or as grounded and concise as you’d like to be. You may choose to use this zine as an opportunity to sketch, draw or collage what your vision for your life/world will look like in the future, to share your healing manifesto or a letter to yourself, to use each page to write mantras or affirmations, to write a healing haiku or other form of poetry. It is truly up to you what is included in these pages. Take a couple of deep breaths and set your intentions.
  2. Set up your zine! ou’ll need some paper and scissors. Take your paper and fold it 1-3 times. The more you fold, the smaller your zine and the more pages you will have, you can also add more paper. Once folded, cut any bound sides so that only the spine of the zine is folded.
  3. Spend some time creating and filling in your pages based on the intentions you set earlier. Try not to think *too* much about making it perfect. No one else besides you will need to see or engage with it (if you choose to keep it to yourself). So, try as much as you can to release the pressure of making it exactly right in all the ways. Return to your breath when you feel yourself getting wrapped up in the final product instead of expressing what you’d like to in this moment.

Regrounding Moment

Regrounding Moment

Once your zine is complete (or you are ready to take a break from the creation for now), take another couple of deep breaths. Flip through the pages of the booklet you’ve created. Acknowledge yourself for moving through this activity today.

An Invitation to Integrate

You are invited to use this zine as you would like. It can stay in the bag you carry so you can pull it out as needed or sit in a special place for you to pick it up when you want to feel grounded in your vision for your healing. You may consider creating different zines for specific topics or needs and try using various mediums to create them.
